March 2, 2011

I wanted to start this as an easy way to update anyone who knows us about Liam's appointments and such, as I can never remember who I've told what to or even who wants to know how much, so I thought that I could just post stuff on here as I think of it, and you can look at it as often or infrequently as you please and we are all happy!
I'll try my best to post on here often, in part so I don't forget I have this account, and in part so other posts aren't as long as this one.  Plus, I've never set up a page like this before and it took me almost 4 hours to figure everything out, and I refuse to let that be in vain!  At the very least I will write about any new appointments, etc.  But, because I'm kind of attached to the little guy, I'll probably write about non-doctor stuff, too.

And, since I said I'd try to update after any appointments and changes, I think I should brag on him a little that we had one today at his weight check.  From March last year until last month , he only managed to put on 2 pounds, and getting that on him was hard, BUT in the last 4 weeks alone, he's gained another pound.
I'm not 100% sure on why, but I think upping his seizure meds last month has made a huge difference in his mood and overall alertness so I think that's at least part of it.  He's still at less than the third percentile in weight for his age, but a month ago he wasn't even on the chart.

We've also started going to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy at the center for rehab in Burlington 2 times a week.  I think he is still trying to figure out what he can get away with there, so he's not exactly 100% cooperative yet, but seems to get a little bit more so every time.

We are also going to start a new "device?", for lack of a better term off the top of my head called TheraTogs, it kind of fits like a wetsuit, and with clothes it doesn't look like he's got anything.   Summed up, it fits tight on the body and applies the same pressure as a wetsuit would, but helps with posture and balance.  The physical therapist who told me about them the first time said that it's amazing how immediate some of the posturing and balance changes are, and have had others recommend them to me since as well, so I am anxious to give it a try.
If you are still confused, or just want to see exactly what they are I will post a link to their page on the right hand side of the page.

I can't think of too much else to post right now other than we see the neurologist again in April  for another check up.  That day we will also get blood drawn to do chromosomal testing, but those can take up to several months to come back, so not sure when we will get those results.
Sometime in May we go back to the eye doctor, and may or may not be getting glasses then, depending on if his eyes are getting worse or staying the same...They know he needs glasses, but they want to put it off until he's a little older and they will be easier to keep on.  I guess that makes sense, but it seems like it would be a really good thing to see as well as possible...Who knows.
And finally, in July we have an appointment with a pediatric endocrinologist to check his growth hormone levels. Must be too many parents feeding their kids brownies and ice cream for dinner or something, I'm guessing the reason it took 7 months to get in is because of all the diabetic kids taking up all the good appointments! We are just doing this at U of I, I figured a hormone test couldn't go nearly as wrong as our last trip up there when they wrongly told us he had cerebral palsy...BUT that's for another rant!
